Portable DIN Rail Power Supply

TL;DR

I had been using a decent bench supply for about a year. It worked well on the desk, but it was so bulky that hanging it on the wall with my tools was impossible. One weekend I designed, printed, and assembled a smaller unit with a magnetic plug. The wall side stays on a DIN rail, and the supply snaps on and off. A second plug lets me feed it from a 12–30 V battery when I want it portable. Input is roughly 5–40 V. Terminals, an XT60 for charging packs, and a fuse box on top so I can replace a fuse without tearing the whole thing apart.


The old brick

The old supply did its job on the bench. What I couldn’t do is hang it on the wall, together with my tools: it was simply too big. I wanted something I could leave mounted, pull off when I needed it elsewhere, and put back without rebuilding anything.

Magnetic DIN rail mount

The idea is simple: a magnetic connector that delivers power, so you snap the supply onto a wall-mounted DIN rail half and it powers everything. The mount stays on the rail, and the supply comes with you.

I like things modular, so the wall half is not fixed to the pack. Leave the mount on the rail, take the supply, put it back when you’re done.

Second plug for battery power

I printed a second plug as a spare. That one goes on a battery in the 12–30 V range and feeds the same supply. Same magnetic interface, no wall required. So the box is a wall unit when I want it and a portable pack when I don’t.

The module itself takes roughly 5 V to 40 V on the input.

Terminals, XT60, fuse on top

On the box I have a terminal block for day-to-day connections, plus an XT60 so I can charge the packs I’m building. I’m planning a switch there so flipping between charge and run is less of a mess of cables.

For repairability I put a fuse box right on top. I’ve blown fuses before, and I don’t want to tear down the whole enclosure just to replace one.
